Call centre software developed by UNICEF captures service statistics on a daily basis. The service statistics have been analyzed by UNICEF periodically.
Since its introduction the Janani Express Scheme has shown encouraging results as per service statistics. Fifty percent of all beneficiaries are BPL cardholders for whom the service is free. Although Janani Express is primarily meant for pregnant women it has also been used for other health emergencies. Table 10.1 provides the service statistics for Janani Express over the years, showing more than 95% use of the vehicle by pregnant women.
As per the May 2010 presentation of Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, 79% of community leaders are aware of the Janani Express which results in higher usage of the service. At present, there are a total of 625 vehicles in 308 blocks across the state (Agnani 2010).
The average number of beneficiaries availing services per day has increased tremendously since its inauguration. The average number of emergencies transported per day has increased from 47 in 2006 to 904 in 2010 and of which pregnancy-related cases are reported to be 882 per day.
The scheme has increased its coverage over the years. As per the state Health Management Information System (HMIS) data, the percentage of Janani Express Yojana (JEY) users among rural JSY beneficiaries has increased tremendously from 21% in 2007â08 to 36% in 2008â09 and to 40% in 2009â10 (Agnani 2010).
Findings of Janani Express Evaluation, United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) (2007) suggest that the scheduled caste (36%) and scheduled tribe (19%) beneficiaries combined account for more than 50% of all beneficiaries (Agnani 2010).
